We made history in 2020. And I made you a promise: to adopt a forward-thinking leadership model for law enforcement that embraces our changing demographics, that's responsive, and safer for all.
My first days in office were marked by ending the 287(g) Program and the dissolution of the litigious Rapid Response Team, as well as, the creation of four specialized units focused on community outreach, human trafficking, gangs, and mental health.
We've done great work together these last few years and there's more to do. It has been my honor to serve Gwinnett County as your Sheriff.

PRIORITIES
STRENGTHENING MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES
Ensuring access to adequate mental health resources is of utmost importance for the residents of Gwinnett County. This includes providing mental healthcare within our jail facility and equipping our first responding deputies with the necessary knowledge and tools to effectively de-escalate situations involving mental health crises. As your Sheriff, I am committed to advocating for improved mental health care at every stage of our justice system.
COMBATING EXCESSIVE USE OF FORCE
As your Sheriff, my job is to mitigate harm and danger to our communities. This includes combating any instances of excessive use of force within our jail facility. My primary objective is to ensure the safety of all individuals, and we will prioritize ongoing training in de-escalation. By equipping our deputies with the necessary skills and knowledge, we strive to fulfill our responsibility of safeguarding you, your family, and our community.
ADDRESSING COMMUNITY OUTREACH
In my role as Sheriff, I have made efforts to enhance our community outreach initiatives; however, there is still work to be done. I will continue to invest time and resources towards further improving our community outreach and engagement. We must restore trust and confidence in the justice system, and this can be achieved by fostering meaningful connections with faith groups, business leaders, and neighborhoods to promote unity within our community.
IMPLEMENTING GANG AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING UNITS
To ensure the safety of our community, particularly our children, I will continue to address
organized crime, and combat gang violence and human trafficking. It is imperative that we break the cycle within our justice system and prevent our children from becoming victims. To achieve this, we will prioritize the strengthening of our gang and human trafficking units, and focus on eradicating these predators and providing a secure environment for our children to thrive in.
IMPROVING RECIDIVISM RATES
The current state of funding for our criminal justice system in Gwinnett County is underfunded. I am committed to fighting for improved funding for our jail facility to guarantee the well-being of our inmates, ensuring they have access to necessary healthcare services and the tools to become productive members of society upon their re-entry. We will continue to focus on inmate rehabilitation, offer educational programs, trade programs, and professional development opportunities to improve recidivism.

FAITH. FAMILY. COMMUNITY.
In 2020, I became the first African American to be elected Sheriff in the history of the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office. History was made, but this road was never about making history. It's about making a lasting difference.
I was born and raised in Gwinnett. I grew up in the Sally Craig Apartments where I was raised by my aunt, a single woman who worked hard to make sure I had everything I needed and most of what I wanted.
I played football and had a number of positive role models, including Chief Dan Meeks who frequented our neighborhood and built trust with all the kids. He was respected a great deal.
Back then, I never anticipated I’d pursue a career in law enforcement. However, this path has become my means of reciprocating the support from my community. I am grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact in this capacity.
Being Sheriff is a humbling honor. But my most cherished titles will always be: Dad, Papa, and Coach.
